Ballet Classes Cost

How Much Do Ballet Classes Cost?

low costClasses: $13-$60 eachaverage costPrivate Lessons: $34-$75 per hourhigh costBallet Camps: $110-$2,550

Ballet or dance lessons are a rite of passage for many children, and there are several options available for parents. In addition to ballet classes, many instructors also offer classes in tap, hip hop and modern dance. Classes are available for children as young as 3, with additional options for older children and high school students. Parents and their children can choose from private sessions with an instructor, group classes or individual lessons.

Typical costs:

  • Purchased individually, classes for children can range between $13 and $60 per class, depending on the student's experience level. Typical classes are 45-90 minutes per session.
  • Several longer-term programs and camps are offered for between about $110 and $2,550, depending on the length of the program and the number of classes involved. For example, the Alaska Dance Theatre offers a 34-week program for $578 for one class per week and $2,550 for six per week and the Tahoe Dance School[1] offers a one-week summer ballet camp for $110-$130.
  • Some local municipalities offer classes through their parks and recreation departments. For example, the Queen Anne's County Parks & Recreation Department[2] in Maryland offered a six-week summer program for $75-$85.
  • Private lessons are available for between $34 and $75 per hour. The Dance Studio[3] , for example, offers private instruction for $60 per hour.
  • The Juilliard School's Summer Dance Intensive in New York City is a three-week program for advanced ballet students between 15 and 17 years old. Forty-four students are selected each year, and auditions and letters of recommendation are required. Tuition is about $1,200 and room and board is about $1,000.

What should be included:
  • For younger children with little or no ballet experience, instruction will likely focus on teaching fundamental dance skills and technique. This can include classical ballet, pointe (the technique by which dancers move on the tips of their toes), free movement (which allows students to improvise) and character dancing (in which performers interpret a character's actions through dance). Advanced instruction builds on basic skills and can include more detailed choreography and stage make-up.
  • Many programs, such as the Tap N Arts[4] dance studio, culminate in a recital in which young dancers perform for parents, family and friends. These recitals can include keepsake booklets and DVD recordings of the performance, often for additional fees.
Additional costs:
  • Students are typically required to wear ballet shoes during practices and performances, and many dance schools offer these shoes for sale. Fields Dance Studio[5] , for example, sells ballet shoes for $18-$24. Specific types of shoes may be required for pointe classes.
  • Clothing needs typically include leotards, tights and ballet skirts. These can cost $7 or more.
  • Some dance schools charge a fee for costume rentals, which can cost between $60 and $120.
  • Administrative fees vary by school and typically include one-time registration fees, which can cost between $10 and $50, and additional charges may apply for missed or dropped classes. Additional recital fees vary depending on the school. Many schools, such as the Almaden School of Music, Art and Dance provide a detailed list of costs and supplies online.
Discounts:
  • Camps and multi-class programs can reduce the per-class cost. For example, the Manassas Dance School[6] offers classes ranging from one hour per week for $13.75 or up to $260 a month for eight hours a week, which lowers the cost per class to $8.12. Additional discounts, some around 10%, are available for prepaid tuition.
  • Some schools offer discounts for multiple children enrolled in their classes.
Shopping for ballet classes:
  • Education and experience levels for dance instructors can vary. Some instructors have advanced degrees and professional experience. Ask about the instructor's background and get billing procedures and cancellation policies in writing. High turnover in the student body can indicate dissatisfaction among the dancers, according to the National Dance Council of America[7] .
  • Certifying bodies for dance instructors include Dance Educators of America and the National Dance Council of America[8] . Find a Dance Studio[9] provides a searchable database of dance instructors and schools.
