Lifting free weights in the form of dumbbells and barbells facilitates greater overall muscle size and stamina, compared to using weight machines, according to a weightlifting guide from the American Council on Exercise.

Machines isolate muscle groups and better control the strain placed on muscles, but free weights promote overall muscle growth that mirrors the range of strength and motion needed for many sports.

Typical costs:
What should be included:
  • Dumbbell and barbell sets include a range of weights, usually in 5-pound increments. Many sets include storage racks, and some barbell sets also include a bench for pressing the weight.
  • Some weightlifting sets have limited lifetime warranties that exclude chipping of the finish and other damage considered to be normal wear and tear.
Additional costs:
  • Weightlifting belts help lifters stabilize their abdominal and back regions. Fitness Giant.com offers styles from $22 to $35.

Here are some other places you might like to try:

discount equipment: http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/

serious powerlifting equipment: http://www.elitefts.com/

great quality gear: http://www.ironmind.com/

more discount equipment: http://www.jesupgym.com/

reasonably priced grippers: http://www.heavygrips.com/
I've only ordered stuff from ironmind, and have had no problems with them. I bought my weight set from Sports Authority when it was on sale (300# set for $110). I bought more weights from someone on craigslist at a pretty good price. For the best prices on weights, I'd recommend going used, either through garage sales, craigslist, or the classifieds -- it'd be great to see some used squat stands or bumper plates for sale, but those unfortunately don't come up very often... cheers
