Shopping for maternity clothes:
  • From Demi Moore's 1991 Vanity Fair cover to the tabloids frequent celebrity "bump" watches, the pregnant figure has come into vogue. Gone are the days of shapeless muu muus; today's women are showing off the fullness of their expectant curves with pride.
  • As a general rule, maternity clothes cost the same as their nonmaternity counterparts in any given store. However, because maternity clothes are temporary additions to a woman's wardrobe, not core pieces, they can be a good opportunity to splurge on seasonal trends.
  • Target features a collection by Liz Lange with casual and career separates ranging from $10-$30.
  • With jeans averaging $30, tops averaging $20 and career separates $18-$35, an outfit could be purchased at Motherhood for $50-$70. Kohl's also carries items from the Motherhood line.
  • At Gap jeans run about $50-$70, but can be found on sale for as low as $15. Gap sweaters average $50.
  • A Pea in the Pod carries designer denim such as 7 for all Mankind jeans ($175-$265) and Diane Von Furstenberg tops ($185-$225).

Amount: $120.00 3 pairs of maternity pants
Posted by: First-time mother in Cerritos, CA.Purchased: December, 2006
Store: Motherhood Maternity
I spent about $110 on 3 pairs of maternity pants (1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of black slacks and 1 pair of brown slacks). I didn't start needing them until I was about 5 months pregnant.

The stretchy jeans are relatively comfortable. There is a cord I can use to tighten. I am still too small to fit into the stretchy-waist slacks (with no cords).
