| Typical costs: | - Range from less than $1/square foot for do-it-yourself panels from a building supply store to $2-$7 or more if installed by a contractor. For an 1,800-square-foot exterior (50' long, 40' wide and 10' tall'), that's $3,600 to $12,600 and up for professionally hung vinyl. Quality, thickness and insulation all matter, and the cheapest bid is not always best.
- Estimates are based on the exterior square feet of your home. For example, if your home was 10' tall, 40' long and 30' wide, it could be a 1,200 square foot home with 10*(40+40+30+30)=1,400 exterior square feet, which could take roughly 14 10'x10' squares of vinyl.
What should be included: | - Vinyl siding ranges from .035 to .055 inches thick, with most premium brands at .040 to .048 inches. Some have a layer of insulation. Thinner siding may sag, crack when hit or tear loose in high winds. Read the warranty to figure out how a product will do in local weather.
- Color is added during manufacture; vinyl doesn't need painting but should be washed periodically. Since dark colors absorb heat, vinyl siding usually comes in lighter tones.
- Proper installation is crucial and there are brand-specific instructions, which may be beyond a home handyman's skills. This Old House and Fine Homebuilding Magazine give overviews.
- Tip: On an older home, check for zoning restrictions against covering historic or architectural details.
- Some people have environmental concerns about polyvinyl chloride plastic resin; Architecture.About.com gives pros and cons.
Additional costs: | - Trim, crown moldings, corner boards and soffits (covering the gap between the house and gutters) add to the bottom line and should be clearly included in any estimate.
- If you already have siding, it will need to be removed, which can cost $1,000-$3,000 to remove.
Shopping for vinyl siding: | - Two of the top manufacturers are CertainTeed and Crane. The Crane Website can help you locate a contractor near you who can install their siding.
- Ask if a contractor is certified by a particular manufacturer or by the Vinyl Siding Institute; and if the company is licensed, bonded and its staff insured. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed.
- Tip: Find vinyl siding projects in your area. After the job is done, knock on the door, compliment the homeowners and ask how the process went and the names of the contractor and manufacturer.
- The written contract should include a final price for the whole project, materials to be used, dates within which the project will be done and the manufacturer's warranty.

| I haven’t sided a house myself in a while. But back in the 80's and through the beginning of the 90's a small contractor could figure $100 a square for materials and $100- 150 for profit. I have seen those numbers double due to the cost increases in material and labor but $940 per square does seem high - even with gutters. I look for numbers somewhere around $450 a square on the low side and $650 a square on the high side depending on the size and complexity of the job (more then one story – staging setup and moving around- trim detail)and overhead of the contractor. |

| Some materials which look a lot like vinyl siding are no longer classified as vinyl. Prices can vary by a factor of five to one. A cheap Alcoa panel compared to a Crane or Nailite shingle pattern. Cranes portfolio cost three times what a Reynolds builder panel cost and is worth every penny of it. Check warranty before you buy any siding. Look at exclusions. Many exclude damage from sunlight and extremes of temperature. Installation cost vary by state. By brother pays his men in Ill. 45% less than we pay on West Coast. |

| I rec'd a few estimates for vinyl siding. They seem to be all over the place...the low end at about $7500, the high end $18679. I have a ranch style home, but my entire house is not vinyl, I also have some parts brick. My quote was to remove the current vinyl, put up gutters, replace the soffits, facsia (sp*). It just seems like a very hig price. |

Hey people listen up.
If you want cheap prices expect the following things to happen.
1. Cheap materials means you will replace them in the near future.
2. A company that goes out of business because they don\'t have a profit.
3. A project which isn\'t finished because the contractor runs out of money.
4. A poor looking job because the contractor can\'t afford the proper tools or sharp blades for old saws.
5. A project which takes a lot longer than it is supposed to because they can\'t figure out a problem or they are skipping from job to job to find money to survive.
6. Workers who smoke, leave cigarette butts in your yard, show their fat bellies, steal your beer, and leave oil stains on your driveway.
I have more of these examples, but I hope you now get the point.
DON\'T BUY THE CHEAP BID IT WILL COST YOU MORE IN THE END.
QUALITY CONTRACTORS HAVE REAL EXPENSES, RESPECT THEM AND THEIR PRICE, IT IS THAT WAY FOR A REASON |

| Complain to the insurance company. That\'s what my dad did when they tried to pay him a depreciated price for shingles that had hail damage. They are ripping you off for sure. Tell them if they don\'t pay you\'ll call your lawyer. You pay the same amount of insurance on new or older shingles so they should pay you the full amount. If they are paying you the depreciated value ask them why the cost of insurance doesn\'t get lower as your shingles get older since they will be paying out less. It\'s an insurance company con. Tell them to pay up or you will sue. |

| I have never seen so many outrageous quotes per sq ftage, in my life!! Yes, it may differ some per product and region of the country but most of the people that I have read so far will really be taken to the cleaners if they fall for these quotes. My partner and I install siding, etc in the Greensboro, NC area and charge $200-300 per square for materials and labor, or more if product is more. These outrageous quotes are also calling for way too much siding and if the customer doesn't know any better they will get ripped off, because they are overcharging you for materials. To the siding guru in OH, just because the price is reasonable and the installers are honest about it, doesn't mean you end up with all that negative stuff you mentioned. We are honest and fair and just trying to make a living but the greedy contractors and dishonest and sloppy installers make it hard on all of us.To the people in Kings Mtn, NC, the quote you got of $1000 was a bit higher than it needed to be. I think the insurance money would have covered it. Ann in Greensboro, contact us and we'll give you a fair and honest quote. sq.1@live.com |

You sir are a con. There is no way you can say the insurance estimate project was high at $1ooo. You never saw the job. I do insurance work and they will give the least amount possible to do the job.
How do you know how much siding is needed on a house you have never seen? You do realize the amount of siding in the quote usually has 10% waste on it, don't you?
Do you think the cost of doing business in Chicago is the same as NC? What are your comp rates? Are you and your partner insured?

| Brand: Vinyl | Installer: Contactor Advice |
| Based on all the post listed, the calculated mean pricing for vinyl siding should run approximately $8.04 per square foot for labor and material with a reputable contractor. Some areas of the country will be less, and some areas might be more. Make sure your contractor is licensed, insured, and possible bonded. Check their references and ask to see pictures of past work and call past clients to get some feedback. Don't always go with the low-ball contractor because they might not be reputable. As a client, you must perform you do diligence in selecting the right contractor. A good contractor will provide you with as much information as you request so DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK for as much information as you need to make you feel comfortable that you are getting the best deal for your money while also receiving a good service. After all....you home is most of our largest investments in a lifetime, so you need to protect your investment. Good luck to you all!!! |
