Vinyl Fence Cost

How Much Does a Vinyl Fence Cost?

average costMaterials: $4-$25+ Per Foot high costProfessional Installation: $7-$70+ Per Foot

Vinyl fences are typically made of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) plastic resin, in 6'-8' sections attached to matching fence posts. The sections may come in preassembled panels or as snap-together planks that are installed individually. High-quality vinyl fencing usually has aluminum or steel inserts in the posts and rails, for added strength. Vinyl tends to be more expensive than wood fencing, but typically lasts longer and requires less maintenance (no staining or painting), although some lower-quality vinyl may fade after continued exposure to sunlight. DoItYourself.com lists the pros and cons[1] of vinyl and wood fencing.

Typical costs:

  • Also called split rail or post and rail, a ranch-style vinyl fence with two to four rails typically costs do-it-yourselfers $4-$12 a linear foot for materials; with a gate and other options do-it-yourself materials can total $500-$1,400 for 100' of fencing and $3,500-$10,000 to enclose a simple square acre (about 830'). With professional installation total costs can be $7-$25 or more a foot, or $800-$2,700 for 100' and $2,100-$8,000 for 300' of fencing.
  • Materials for a 3'-4' tall vinyl picket fence typically cost $9-$20 a foot, or about $1,000-$2,500 for 100' and $2,800-$6,200 for 300', depending on style, height, materials and location. With installation, expect to pay $15-$30 or more a foot, or $1,600-$3,500 for 100' and $4,600-$9,000, depending on local rates, the number of fence posts installed and the complexity of the installation (flat or sloping land, number and style of gates, number of corner posts required, etc.).
  • A 4'-6' tall vinyl semi-privacy or privacy fence typically costs $12-$25 or more a foot for materials, or with one gate about $1,300-$3,000 for 100' and $3,600-$8,000 for 300', depending on height and materials. With installation, total costs can be $15-$70 or more a foot, depending on local rates and complexity of installation, or with one gate about $1,600-$7,500 for 100' and $4,500-$22,000 for 300' of fencing. For example, DIYNetwork.com provides installation instructions[2] for a vinyl privacy fence using snap-together planks, and estimates that the moderately difficult project can take several weekends and $2,500-$5,000 in materials.

What should be included:
  • Installation is often done in two stages, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations. After the fence path is cleared, post holes are dug and the posts installed in concrete (or sometimes gravel). A day or two later, after the concrete has hardened, the fencing is attached to the posts and any gates are installed. Lowe's provides basic installation instructions[3]
  • Before installing any type of fence, call 811[4] to have utility companies come out and mark any underground utility lines; or contact local utility companies directly. Also check local zoning, building and neighborhood codes; many dictate the height and type of fencing allowed, and property line set-backs required. A building permit might be required.
Additional costs:
  • Factors that influence the total cost include steep slopes, unusual obstructions or difficult access, or adding decorative ornamentation or additional gates.
  • For do-it-yourselfers digging fence post holes, a manual post hole digger or auger typically costs $15-$110; buying a small power auger can cost $60-$600 or more depending on size and materials, and whether it's a one-man or two-man power auger; and a one-day rental of a powered post hole auger can cost $50-$95, depending on location and type of auger.
Shopping for a vinyl fence:
  • Determine the length of fence needed and look for examples of the style desired. An American Fence Association photo gallery[5] displays different types of fences.
  • Vinyl fencing materials are available from most home improvement centers like Home Depot[6] or online retailers like Amazon[7] .
  • Find local contractors through the American Fence Association[8] .
  • Get several estimates; verify that the company is properly bonded and insured;and ask for and check references.
