| Typical costs: | - An "average" backyard fence of 200 linear feet costs about $2,500-$3,000, with gates adding $100-$250 or more depending on size and style, according to a Virginia construction company. Actual prices depend on the type and height you choose, the total length and the number of pedestrian/vehicle gates. Costs also vary considerably in rural and urban areas, depending on the local economy.
- A yard 50 feet wide and 100 feet deep needs about 300 linear feet of fencing; surrounding an acre takes about 1,070 linear feet. The examples below assume two gates, one for pedestrians and one for vehicles:
- Chain link is relatively low cost, durable and easy to install. For a 4-foot-high fence around 300 linear feet with two gates, materials alone run $1,800-$2,500; having it installed bumps the cost up to $2,400-$3,300. For an acre with two gates, materials run $6,800-$8,900 and installation bumps it to $9,000-12,000.
- A 300-foot-long 4-1/2-foot high three-rail wood "ranch" fence with two gates costs around $4,500-$5,500; for an acre, it's $11,500-$13,500. Having the same fence installed in durable, low-maintenance vinyl will double those prices, if not more. You save about 40-50 percent if you buy your own materials and can build it yourself.
- A 3-foot-high 300-foot-long picket fence (with two gates) is about $6,000-$9,250, installed; for an acre it's $20,000-$30,000. Having someone install a 6-foot-high cedar privacy fence runs about $11-$18 a linear foot, or $3,300-$5,400 for 300 feet with two gates; a similar fence around an acre would be $12,100-$19,800. Again, doing it yourself saves about 40-50 percent.
What should be included: | - HGTV.com gives an overview of the different types of fencing while ThisOldHouse.com gives a list of what to keep in mind when deciding on a fence and instructions for building four distinctive wooden fences.
- Basic moving of shrubbery
- Installing fence, posts and retaining wall boards
- Use of pressure treated wood for the posts and wall boards
Additional costs: | - Steep slopes, unusual obstacles and additional gates are some of the factors that can add to your costs.
- Adding ornamentation, such as a decorative lattice on top of the fence
Shopping for a fence: | - YourFenceStore.com display pictures, information and prices on wide variety of fencing materials. Fencing manufacturers Master Halco and Hoover provide estimating calculators for different types of fences, plus referrals to local contractors.
- If hiring a contractor, get (free) estimates from several companies. Be sure they're properly bonded and insured, licensed in your state and don't have many complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Request (and check) references from satisfied customers.

Doing it yourself priceing

| Linear Feet: 120 | Type of Fence: Ceder |
I built the fence on the side of our house.
2x4\'s and 4x4\'s I got from a LUMBER YARD here in Houston. (saved 100 from going to Home depot) The cement I bought at Home depot (cheap). The ceder posts I bought off craigslist (saved 250$ from home depot) anywhere from 40-60$ for Uhaul truck if you don\'t have a friend with a truck. 30 bucks to rent a nail gun and 15$ for the nailgun nails. 10$ in nails from home depot. You CAN do this with only a circular saw, measuring tape, hammer, and pencil but it\'s easier to have a miter saw (expensive and don\'t go out and get a 10 inch you would need a 12inch for the 4x4\'s and they are expensive {but not at pawn shops ;) } and a post hole digger (20$ home depot) (plus you need to do it on a day near around the time \'yard waste\' is picked up from your house. The hardest part is leveling your fence and making it straight. String helps a lot but you must keep in mind ground slope when cutting your posts in this case. That\'s it. Takes about 2 days for the 4x4\'s and cement work and 1 day for the crossmembers and picket work. |

6' wood fence

I wonder where you are getting your info from. According to my calculation as an installer, price based on Lowe's or Home Depot, this is my conclusion; the cost will vary depending on what kind of fence you use, terrain condition and way of installation.
Posts 4X4X8, two foot in ground, one bag of concrete per post, 8' fence one sided dog ear, one gate including regular hardware and no sag hardware, pick up of material, no mark up on material but including some overhead, like office, pick up and rent auger, cost per foot on a 130 foot fence with one gate is $14.56 per foot. When using shadow box fencing the cost is $18.02 per foot.
When using LEGAL labor the installation cost is between $10.00 and $15.00 per foot. At this price nothing can go wrong on the job or we would not make a penny.
So when I see pricing from $15.00 to $22.00 per foot installed, all included it must be considering stolen wood and ILLEGAL labor. |

| I enjoy this site, but info seems a bit old. Is it active? Perhaps it just reflects the economy and building downturn. Here in Ocean County, NJ the fence builders I\'ve called just don\'t show up for the job! Amazing, since they do show up for the estimates and spend there (and my) time. Anyone have a recommendation? THANKS |

| We got this estimate for just shy of 5000 lf with three 5\' work gates. At the time of the estimate, the estimator hinted that the owner would probably work with us, either on the price itself or with a material upgrade since we were dealing with a large amount of fence. I\'m waiting on a callback today to see what we can negotiate. |
