| How Much Does a Fence Cost? |
|
|
| |
 |
|
| |
| Typical costs: | - An "average" backyard fence of 200 linear feet costs about $2,500-$3,000, with gates adding $100-$250 or more depending on size and style, according to a Virginia construction company. Actual prices depend on the type and height you choose, the total length and the number of pedestrian/vehicle gates. Costs also vary considerably in rural and urban areas, depending on the local economy.
- A yard 50 feet wide and 100 feet deep needs about 300 linear feet of fencing; surrounding an acre takes about 1,070 linear feet. The examples below assume two gates, one for pedestrians and one for vehicles:
- Chain link is relatively low cost, durable and easy to install. For a 4-foot-high fence around 300 linear feet with two gates, materials alone run $1,800-$2,500; having it installed bumps the cost up to $2,400-$3,300. For an acre with two gates, materials run $6,800-$8,900 and installation bumps it to $9,000-12,000.
- A 300-foot-long 4-1/2-foot high three-rail wood "ranch" fence with two gates costs around $4,500-$5,500; for an acre, it's $11,500-$13,500. Having the same fence installed in durable, low-maintenance vinyl will double those prices, if not more. You save about 40-50 percent if you buy your own materials and can build it yourself.
- A 3-foot-high 300-foot-long picket fence (with two gates) is about $6,000-$9,250, installed; for an acre it's $20,000-$30,000. Having someone install a 6-foot-high cedar privacy fence runs about $11-$18 a linear foot, or $3,300-$5,400 for 300 feet with two gates; a similar fence around an acre would be $12,100-$19,800. Again, doing it yourself saves about 40-50 percent.

| What should be included: | - HGTV.com gives an overview of the different types of fencing while ThisOldHouse.com gives a list of what to keep in mind when deciding on a fence and instructions for building four distinctive wooden fences.
- Basic moving of shrubbery
- Installing fence, posts and retaining wall boards
- Use of pressure treated wood for the posts and wall boards
|
| Additional costs: | - Steep slopes, unusual obstacles and additional gates are some of the factors that can add to your costs.
- Adding ornamentation, such as a decorative lattice on top of the fence
|
| |
| Shopping for a fence: | - YourFenceStore.com display pictures, information and prices on wide variety of fencing materials. Fencing manufacturers Master Halco and Hoover provide estimating calculators for different types of fences, plus referrals to local contractors.

| Linear Feet: 100 lf | Type of Fence: Treated Pine |
With reference with Joe Adams in Katy, Tx; (Fence Replacent). And if you can give the contractors name to me, thanks..but I have a need for a replacement fence (thanks to Ike), treated pine, much like Mr. Adams, but treated pine..and only about 100lf. I had a estimate for $2376 from a local builder..no "take away", put the old on the drive..blah,blah..! Want 1/2 $ before the works starts, 1/2 after the project is done.
Nawwwwwww..no deal folks. I've been a heavy constuction estimator for 32 years. The best price that I could estimate would be $1800 and that's with extras..profit, etc..ect.. |
