I believe the insurance covered most of the extractions. The process took about 40-45 minutes but it felt like forever. Had a few stitches out in. I just hope my upper teeth aren't that bad. |

Wisdom Tooth pulle
|
| Posted by: A user in the UK in The UK, Other. | Purchased: November, 2008 |
| Which Tooth: wisdom tooth |
Needed to have my wisdom tooth pulled in the UK. I wasn't registered with a dentist at the time (otherwise It would have been free) so I had to call and make an emergency appointment at the dental hospital in Glasgow.
They took me in, gave me an X-Ray, identified the problem (wisdom tooth growing at an angle and pushing the teeth in front) Shot me up full of anaesthetic and pulled it.
From phonecall to extraction about 5 hours. Because it was an emergency at the hospital, and not an emergency appointment at my registered dentist (I had none) I had to pay for the extraction. The total cost was £3.04 (around US$5)
Browsing a couple of posts here, I think most British people don't realise how lucky we are to have the NHS (National Health Service) when I see how much a simple procedure like this can cost in the US |

SON HAS NO INSURANCE/IMPACTED WISDOMS
|
| Posted by: User in Calif in OC, CA. | Purchased: December, 2008 |
| Which Tooth: WISDOM TEETH |
| My son has an impacted wisdom tooth that causes him much pain and suffering. The other wisdoms haven't created this much problem but he doesn't have medical insurance. His job doesn't offer it and at current the amount it would cost him to get the extraction would be around $700 as it is impacted and there is bone involved. He talks on the phone to customers all day and it interferes with his speaking not to mention makes him sick. I feel horrible about it because I'm not working and have no savings to be able to stretch my budget to help him. If he has the procedure done he has to take a few days off of work and that will cut into his pay as well. I'm encouraging him to save as much money as he can but his pay is not that much and it will be months before he can have anything done. I get really peeved about this. There are people in the USA who get low cost/no cost medical and meanwhile those working to barely get by, get nothing. Does anyone know of a low cost reputable dentist in southern calif? I appreciate what the user from the UK said of having NHS in place that helps people there. It isn't a perfect system but when you have to fully pay out of pocket it is nice to have something in place that helps with the costs. I believe every LEGAL citizen has a right to free medical care IF they cannot pay. This doesn't mean everything should be mandatory and socialized but when it comes to peoples' health we already pay tons in taxes and get little in return to show for it. M.O. |

| For 4 years now I have been going to Algodones, MX to the same dentist. It is 6 miles from Yuma, AZ. You park your car on US soil and walk 300 yards to the dentist. Extractions: $35 each. Root canal: $250. Bridge (1 tooth or 3 unit) $600. Dentures: top and bottom $400. (Requires 2 trips). Fillings: $60. Crowns: $200. Veneers $275 each. This gives you an idea of the costs involved. This tiny border town has 300 dentists and they are as good as or better than the average US dentist. I have received excellent dental care from my dentist. US dentists make $30-$40K a day. That is outrageous. There is no red tape in Algodones..no "consultation fees) and all that nonsense. It is modern, up to date, etc. You can have most work done in 2 days (root canal and crown, etc). Do a search for "dentists in Algodones, MX" and see for yourself. My periodontist there graduated from UCLA. |

New dentist insisted/demanded that I would have to have bone graft after extraction even though it was in the far back next to where wisdom was removed 30 yrs. ago. That would cost an extra $550 out of my pocket or he wouldn't pull it. Told him to stick his graft. What a scam. Since I was in no mood for a road trip to Ensenada,I drove 1/2 mile down the street and paid dentist $281 to pull it.Wouldv'e been $5 but I couldn't wait a month for HMO to change "CARE PROVIDER". I only had to pay $150 out of pocket along with a $40 co-pay to have 4 wisdom teeth extracted and a broken 2nd premolar on the lower jaw extracted as well. 2 of the wisdom teeth were impacted, the other 2 were fully erupted with no impact. My health insurance paid for the impacted teeth and the broken tooth. My dental insurance paid for the other 2 wisdoms that were not impacted so out of pocket I only had to shell over $190. Thank god for health and dental.

impacted wisdom tooth extraction
|
| Posted by: J o in Morristown, NJ. | Purchased: August, 2009 |
| Which Tooth: 17 |
| My wisdom tooth had an enormous cavity that was painful every night. It was growing into the adjacent tooth and xray showed it cutting into the enamel of the tooth next to it. My dentist couldnt extract because of the angle. My oral surgeon who removed two previous wisdom teeth did it. He was extremely fast and I didn't feel anything after only having the gums numbed. In fact I was surprised when the nurse said it was out. He put in a stitch to close it up. Cost was $395 and I have no insurance, and that includes the follow up visit. I provided him a print out of an xray image so he didnt do the full mouth single xray that normally costs around $125. The huge cavity showed some infection so he gave me a script for an amoxicillin antibiotic which cost $11 for about ten days, again no insurance. Tylenol 3 also cost $11 but I only used one tablet. Some soreness but no real pain. Previous extractions in 2004 cost either 250 or 300 at the same oral surgeon, so either this extraction was more complex or prices have risen 30% in a few years. His office is across from Morristown Memorial Hospital in a prestigious medical professionals building. As an aside, my dentist in an expensive area of central Philadelphia charged $930 for full mouth scaling/deep cleaning and quoted $250 to pull the wisdom tooth but it turned out to be too complex for him. Initial visit with full xrays and charting my teeth pockets for the cleaning cost $170. A clinic in a ghetto area of town quoted, I think, $600 for full mouth deep cleaning/scaling, plus the cost of the initial visit which I did not get a quote for (price is even cheaper if you can show that you have low income). As for the Brit above who mentions his $5 extraction - that's cheap but you're paying for it through higher taxes somewhere along the line. |

| Posted by: Joet in Chester County, PA. | Purchased: August, 2009 |
| Which Tooth: One Back upper Molar |
| Had to have tooth removed due to infection of the bone from periodontal issues, That was $250 after I asked ( begged )for a 10% discount. The rest was for a bone graft, that the dentist said was needed to stabilize the adjacent teeth. Sounds logical but what do I know. The bone graft seems a bit outrageous cost wise, just filling the empty space with some bone graft material that can\'t cost that much and maybe 5 minutes extra time. I don\'t have dental insurance, but maybe I got to look into it at this point. If extractions are done by an oral surgeon, other than a regular dentist, maybe my Blue Shield Medical Insurance would have covered this, don\'t know. Too late now but I got to look into something. I have to go back for a periodontal exam and start scaling etc. God knows what that will cost, but I guess it beats pulling all my teeth and getting dentures. I\'m going to look into taking a trip to Mexico, as mentioned by another guy. |

| We haven't done this yet, but our dental surgeon gave us that price. We've run out of dental insurance money so are stuck with this cost unless we negotiate it down. My thinking is that this is the cost they bill the insurance company, and the actual fees they receive are always lower based on their contract with the provider. Anybody have experience with these kinds of over-charges? I'm reluctant to pay all cash for this--seems like the insurance company negotiated rate would likely be a third or more less than the price quoted. |

| Which Tooth: 4 wisdom |
| I spoke with 2 seperate oral surgeons in Southern NH. My estimate was approximately 350.00 per tooth (all four of which are completely erupted). The first visit plus x-rays would be 180.00 at one doctor and 250 at the other. The big expense was being put under which would cost me almost 1,000.00. Both estimates with everything came to approximately 2,500.00. I then called Aspen Dental who said that my first visit with x-rays was FREE because I didn't have insurance. I just came home with an estimate of 900.00 to have all four taken out and thats with novacaine. They gave me many options both medically and financially. First they told me I could have one of the dentists remove my teeth, but they can only administer novacine and can't put me under. My other option was to make an appointment with their oral surgeon who came in twice a month. It would cost a little more per tooth, but he would be able to put me under for the procedure and this would cost an extra 350.00. Thats a big difference from the 950.00 I was told by the other two offices.I will be using Care Credit to pay for my treatment which offers no interest plans. So shop around it's definitely worth it. |

Pulling #5 now, then later all 4 wisdoms
|
| Posted by: John P. in Greensboro, NC. | Purchased: October, 2009 |
| Which Tooth: # 5, 1, 16, 17, 32 |
Reading this site has been such a relief! Yesterday (10/8/2009), I had to back out of a emergency extraction (#5 was hurting like hell) because I didn't have my $193.00 co-pay (total cost $266.00). With pain-killers, I have to await another paycheck in 2 weeks - ha. This #5 tooth was initially (Dec. 2008) a root-canal candidate, but by August this year, half of it broke off (in pieces - i actually saved these pieces for a while - hehe) until now it's beyond redemption... it's got to come out.
My initial dentist (2008) who was not on my CIGNA network, charged me $215.00 per quad (total $860, my share was $640.00 - ouchie!) for deep cleaning. Her office mgr deceived me (about the cost) at the outset, until it was too late, and I had to scrape and scrawl to come up with that money. Sadly, the dentist herself was superb, i just felt deceived by the office mgr, and have asked them to transfer my records to my wife's dentist (who is a network provider with impeccable credentials, and whom I should have gone to in the first place!)
The old dentist (and her network of high-priced, fancy oral surgeons) quoted me near $3000.00 for the extractions and root-canal listed above. But not anymore, I'm outta there!
The five extractions listed above (anesthesia, etc. included) will now run me $1480 total. After insurance (shitty still, if you ask me), I pay $1087 total. ($193.00 for #5, $894.00 for the 4 wisdoms). My goal is to extract #5 first (in 2 weeks). Then will probably do #16 and #17 before end of the year. Wisdom #17 is growing at an angle and impacting the next molar. It'd be REAL TOUGH budget-wise for my family, and we'll most certainly have no Christmas to speak of this year. It's a paycheck to paycheck existence as it is!
#1 and #32 will have to wait until 2010 sometime.
Thanks to all you guys for coming out here to share your experiences. Such a comfort to know that we're not the only ones suffering through doctor and dentist bills.
God help us all! |

my back tooth broke on a thurs. night, and split down the middle.it was brittle from lots of drilling and fillings (that had fallen out)now it was like a splintered bone sticking out of my lower jaw, couldn't swallow without bumping it. bad pain + i had a terrible time finding dentist open next a.m.(friday) as this is just a small area they have gone to short weeks (ie: tues. -thurs.) this limits your bargaining power, obviously. i did find someone who would take me about 40 mins. away. I ended up with 'surgical' removal, some cutting tooth and gum up (yikes),multiple shots in jaw bec. the sucker wouldn't budge. so my price really was reasonable bec. of tooth location and the emergency nature. it included gas & shots, xray & exam, dissoluble stitches.
i feel better having read these posts, and it is very helpful to read others comments. i don't have ins., but don't mind paying a fair price. it is embarrassing to see some dentists' over the top numbers. the poster was right- do shop around if you have the time-there are big differences out there. |

| I had 3 teeth extracted yesterday as part of in-progress work that will total bet. $2400 and $2600, inc. scaling, replacing old fillings, whitening, and a permanent partial incl 4 artificial teeth. The work is performed by either 3rd year or grad students under supervision of professors. You have to pay as you go for each procedure. Two students did the work yesterday and it was passed on by their professor. I'm very pleased with their work and would suggest anyone find a dental school if they can, even if they have to travel a ways. It's worth the savings and I believe you can be assured of getting the best. |

Wisdom teeth

| Which Tooth: Wisdom Teeth |
| I am under Tricare United Concordia dental. They cover all but 372 for my wisdom teeth extraction, I mostly paid for the general anesthesia. But the problem is I need a root canal, which is 450 and then like 500-1000 for a crown(crazy) Or I could go to the original oral surgeon and get it extracted which will be 500. They covered my wisdom but not this upper right molar. Sound fair? I think not! |

I asked him to check my other teeth and he said he would not for some reason this guy must have forgot he requested 65 for exam i paid him and did not recieve the service? some do take advantage of cash customers knowing insurance would have only paid 125-200 for that extraction no honor among men. |

The cost quoted for dentures (uppers and lowers) is $4,830. The insurance will pay $1,500. So the out of pocket amount will be 3,330. |

One molar surgical extraction
|
| Posted by: extraction and some in Princeton, NJ. | Purchased: December, 2009 |
| Which Tooth: it was upper molar (not 3rd) |
| My general dentist referred me to oral surgeon. He spent 15 minutes with me to inject lidocaine, and then to pull the upper molar tooth out. Hygienist was with me too, and another one came in to help and keep my head stable during the last pullin. They bill me $325; insurance and insurance discounts make my out of pocket only $60. Sad to have tooth pulled due to lack of getting filling for 2-surfaces (but, dentist said removing decay most likely wouldve caused root canal therapy too and crown). So, a treatment of ~$960 outpocket for rootcanal and crown, turned to $60 + ~$3600 for implant, abutement, and crown. |

| This is a comment to David O. in Walnut Creek. I work in a doctors and i deal with the billing. Yes when a doctor or any doctor for a fact will over charge you by a lot. When we bill insurance they usually give back anywhere from 10-20% depending on the provider discount. You can try talking them down to half the price since they wont get close to 30% of what they bill to the insurance anyways. Hope this helps for you and anyone else who might have been quoted too high =) |

feel traumatized a bit and over charged

| Posted by: a user in marlboro, MA. | Purchased: January, 2010 |
| Which Tooth: second from last molar |
| I had a bad infected tooth and needed it pulled. I have no insurance so i had to pay $100 just to get an exam. The office told me that if i were to get the tooth pulled that day it would be $185 all together, but here is the kicker they didnt want to do i because i have bad anxiety when it comes to the dentist so they refered me to an oral surgeon so i could be partially sedated. The office there quoted me at $300 and thinking it would be worth it to not be traumatized i agreed and payed upfront before i went in. When i got in the chair to my supprise they started sticking me with needles and i wasnt getting sedated. I concequently started to have an anxiety attack. When i told the nurse i was expecting some kind of sedation she told me to get over it and that i shouldnt be reacting this way and that little kids could handle it. it took them a long time to finally get me numb and then the extraction was simple it took 2 seconds. I feel ripped off and i have no idea what to do about it. |

highway robbery.I'll go shopping around town tomorrow and see what I can do about finding a new dentist that I can afford. This sucks! This is the first time in my life I can't do a medical procedure because of lack of decent insurance.I ran my own business for 18 years and worked full time during the day. |

Due to being on antibiotics constantly all my life among other medications I am having to get my teeth pulled and get dentures.
I was expecting to spend $2000.00 for them and was shocked when the bill came for $4420
I am disabled and Medicare nor Medicaid will help with this cost. I am someone who worked 16 to 20 hours a day before I was injured (and loved it) and now it saddens me to have to go to friends and family to ask for money to help for medical treatment but, since it is making my health worse because of the infection it is something that has to be done. America really needs to consider dental and vision and medical coverage as something every citizen has a right to no matter what their financial standing. |

Three lower Molars extracted
|
| Posted by: MorganMax in Las Cruces, NM. | Purchased: May, 2010 |
| Which Tooth: 18, 19, 20 |
I hadn't had my teeth looked at in 5 years due to not having insurance. My employer took advantage of a low income state plan back in Feb and I had a major toothache in May. Turned out three of my teeth had decayed to the pulp and couldn't be saved--they even had to give me three shots to get the mouth numb enough to get the #20 out.
While it has a total cap of 1,200 the state assisted insurance payed for 60% of my tooth extraction and I had no problem with dry sockets afterword. Looking around this cost is pretty much average for this area of New Mexico and on par with Dental Plans. |

Though, the molar wasn't infected, the dentist said it would be best to extract both. Cost was supposed to be $200.00 per tooth.$400.00 total. Both teeth came out in under 10 minutes and with no complications. The dentist ended up charging me only $231.00 for both teeth. This was a huge relief since I have no insurance and a payment plan was not an option. |

| Which Tooth: #30 (1st molar) |
| The tooth had cracked vertically under the crown. My dentist said it might break during extraction, so he referred me to an oral surgeon. It was hard to remove this tooth, as it did break and the surgeon had to drill several times to dislodge it from the gum. He really had to work at it hard. It took about 25 minutes, more time than a previous extraction. The office demanded 50% up front, so I paid $208 today and they will bill the insurance. So the entire cost was $416. |
