| How Much Does Tooth Extraction Cost? |
| |
| |
| Typical costs: | - A simple extraction (for a tooth that is fully erupted from the gum and has small roots) starts around $75 in some locations but generally runs about $100 -$150.
- A surgical extraction, such as when a tooth is broken off at the gum line, is around $150 -$300; for a soft tissue extraction of a partially impacted tooth (an incision has to be made into the gums) the cost is about $200 -$350; and for a partial bony extraction (the tooth has some bone covering it) expect to pay anywhere from $300 -$600.
- Extracting a wisdom tooth (also called a third molar) starts around $150 -$350 for a tooth that is fully erupted from the gum. Extracting a partially or completely impacted wisdom tooth ranges from $350 -$650.
- The above fees often include a follow-up office visit to check healing or remove sutures. Many dental insurance plans cover 70 percent to 80 percent of tooth extraction costs if the procedure is considered to be medically necessary and not done just for cosmetic reasons.
| What should be included: | - Tooth extractions may be performed by a dentist or a specialist known as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Normally a tooth is firmly encased in a bony socket and attached by a ligament. The socket needs to be gently widened to allow the tooth to be removed; patients will feel pressure but not pain during this procedure. Sometimes a tooth is so firmly anchored that is has to be removed in sections. AnimatedTooth.com provides details on what to expect before an extraction, during the extraction procedure and after the extraction is done.
- WebMD.com gives an overview on wisdom teeth, including the pros and cons of having them removed.
| Additional costs: | - Related fees may include an initial surgical consultation ($50 -$135), x-rays ($13 -$135) and sedation ($200 -$400 or more).
| Discounts: | - To find dental college clinics with reduced rates for work by supervised students or faculty, visit DentalSite.com.
- Dental societies may pay part of the costs for low-income patients; visit the American Dental Association for the organization in your state.

| So I just got dentures I'm 23 and well I'm still in pain.I forgot what the total cost without insurance was, but I ended paying 1350; that's including the dentures. I believe the insurance covered most of the extractions. The process took about 40-45 minutes but it felt like forever. Had a few stitches out in. I just hope my upper teeth aren't that bad. |
