| Typical costs: | - Estimates range from $350-600 for a front tooth, which usually has one canal, to $500-$860 for a back molar, which can have three or more, according to WebMD. Prices are based on difficulty, local cost of living and the dentist's level of training and experience. An endodontist, specializing in tooth root problems, may charge up to 50 percent more.
What should be included: | - When the root inside a tooth is infected, the inflamed or damaged tissue is removed and the hollow area filled to keep bacteria out. The University of Iowa College of Dentistry gives a quick overview.
- An X-Ray reveals the shape of the canals and any bone infection. Once the area is numb, a rubber sheet isolates the infected tooth, which is drilled open, cleaned using pin-sized files and suction, filled, sealed and covered. This might require more than one appointment, to let the infection clear before the canal is sealed.
- Tip: Ask about magnification. Wikipedia.com reports that root canals might be more successful with a microscope or similar equipment.
- The only other option is to extract the tooth and replace it with a bridge, implant or partial denture.
Additional costs: | - A crown or other protective covering adds to the final bill.
Discounts: | - Dental colleges offer reduced rates for services by supervised students or faculty; DentalSite.com lists school locations.
- The American Dental Association lists state dental societies, which may provide partial payment of dental fees for qualified low-income patients.

The bill was $1250 total, $250 out of pocket

| Which Tooth: back molar (#18) | Practitioner: |
| A molar which had gotten a gold crown a year ago was aching and was sensitive to hot and cold, and it turned out the nerve was dying. My dentist referred me to an endontist, Michelle Olsen at Peninsula Endontics. The whole root canal took a little over an hour. The bill came to $1,250, but they accept Delta Dental PPO, which covered 80%, so I paid $250 out-of-pocket. The total seemed pretty high, but I was seeing an endontist, and Menlo Park is a pretty expensive neighborhood. I was pretty happy to pay only $250 out of my own pocket. |

| My reg dentist sent me for a Root Canal stating the charge would be $50-100 over average root canal charges. My research indicates average charge for this would not exceed $900, therefore I was looking to pay $1000. I was charged $1370. for the root canal. Am I being ripped off? |

| It was the bottom left tooth, which is a really big tooth. And this was at an endontist, which my dentist referred me to. Does your dentist have that training? Was a crown also included? My tooth already had a crown, and that cost an additional $800 ($400 after insurance). $1,370 would seem reasonable for an endontist, or very reasonable if the crown was included. |

| For my root canal, I was referred to an experienced endodontist in the area due to the location of the tooth and was shocked when I heard how much it would cost, even with insurance. However, during my brief stay in the waiting room, I heard the receptionist quoting prices of $300-$700, which made me feel a little better about my seemingly exorbitant fee. I spent $255 out of pocket, including deductible, for great novocaine and a fast, painless that left me wondering why root canals were given such a bad rap! (I later understood, when I paid $85 for the temporary filling and close to $600 for the subsequent crown.) |

| A cracked filling caused decay of the nerves in a molar. Sensitivity to cold/hot was an indication of need for root canal. Endodontist found complications during surgery: four canals and calcification, but price still was $1250. I have no insurance. Filling and crown are extra. I had quotes as high as $2000. Good root canal, I really wish I could find a half
price root canal or buy 1 get one free. They are
very exspensive. Do the items they use in the canal
cost so much? They should not be based on the cost
of living but on the good dentist moral codes.Something must be done to freeze outragous prices. The dentist was really good and I never felt a thing, but caps annoy me, it feels like
plastic rubber. Wish you coulld find canals for $500. |

| I got my root canal done by root canal specialist, recomended by my dentist, and it came out to be $1,450. I maxed out with my insurace, so I had to pay 450 out of pocket. I don\'t mind paying that much, but that didn\'t include getting a crown. I\'ll be seeing my dintist in few days to get a crown, and that\'ll be an extra 700 out of pocket since my insurance is maxed out aready... Doesn\'t that seem a lot just to get a tooth fix? I guess it can\'t be helped. |

| My first root canal i spent $990 to get a root canal and a veneer. There was extra charges included in that price for having to come in on a saturday to repair a fractured tooth. The second root canal is still in progress. The tooth was so sensitive the day of the rootcanal, that they had to stop in the middle of it, and schedule the rest of it after taking anti-biotics. The first visit cost me $580. I still have to pay for the next visit, and a crown. So far i've paid $1570 to fix two teeth, with some more to go. That would have been nice vacation money. |

They quoted me for deep cleaning at $200.00, possible root canal another $700.00 and a new crown for that root canal another $1000.00. I'm thinking it's probably a rip off. | I went to the dentist in feb and the dentist sent me to an endodontist. I was worried and called the insurance because the endo charged $75 just to look at it. The insurance said they would reimburse me. They schedule me in for the following week. I called the insurance to make sure they would cover it and they said yes. So I went and had the work done. Next I'm getting calls for collecting all the charges. So I call the insurance to ask why they haven't paid. They said the charges are way to high, we only covered a certain amount ($400-$600) for a root canal. Its now June and they still have not paid a dime. I wrote a appeal letter which was denied. Insurance is just a waste of money. |

I would have thought the pulpotomy was a good chunk of the root canal procudure, the tooth is already drilled out and cleaned and the pulp above the roots has been removed I was thinking it'd be closer to $500 to finish the job. |

The root canal itself wasn\'t that expensive, only around $600.00, but everything else really adds up. Luckily I was able to get a normal filling in, which should hold for a few years before I get it capped. The procedure wasn\'t too bad, also. It was long, but not painful. Just remember to get your teeth checked so you don\'t have to go through all this in the first place! |

| The cost was a shock since I may need to have the crown replaced for another $1000. However, I was very pleased with the treatment which included antibiotics for the abscess. I feel I did the right thing to take care of this before it got worse (also absolutely pain free procedure). |

| I asked for price up front. Paid cash. Most of the work was done by assistant. Dentist finished the job. The anesthesia is very painful. I needed 3 shots. I had lots of pain after the procedure. BTW, price does not include the crown, I will get that at the School of Dentistry. Don't know how much it cost. Be careful with students. I usually go to the School of Dentistry cos it's cheaper but sometimes the students don't have a clue about what to be done. |

| Went in for a routine filling, then they hit the nerve and told me I needed a root canal. Total cost of root canal, post, and crown is 3200. Oh yeah, it was more $$ more for the painful temporary filling they put over my exposed nerve after. No wonder people hate going to the dentist. Woke up this morning feeling fine, now my tooth is killing me, and so is my colon from bending over to pay. Ripoff. |

I am a real chicken when it comes to dental pain so I chose sedation dentistry. I am being charged
$3,554.00 for both root canal and crown.
I live in the Chicago, IL suburbs. Still seems tremendously high priced. Am I wrong to think this is too much money to pay? |

The state of dentistry is unsustainable. They must all be rich but none appear to be happy. Highest suicide rate due to GUILT and knowledge of causing PAIN and SUFFERING. |

I went to him in pain as a referral from my
dentist. He did have special equpiment for root canal surgery. I needed it done that day, as I
could not sleep due to the pain.
He and an assistant worked on me for two hours.
It was successful, but I think they charged too much. What can you do when you are in pain?
They take advantage of you. |

| What can I say. I had not been to a DDS for over 15 years. I cracked a molar and it became infected and I was experiencing agonizing pain. The Dentist was on vacation so I went to his back-up and he gave me a temporary filling ($155 - $80 out of Pocket). When my dentist came back, he recommended a specialist. The specialist (endodontist) needed to "consult" and then make an additional appointment a month later for the root canal. ( $1870 - $870 out of pocket). I just had the crown anchored a few days ago and now I still have a bill of $1529 and no more coverage so it is all mine. Why did this require (6) separate visits? Perhaps I should be sending someone a bill. |

Will be getting this done (my first root canal) next week. No insurance.
Due to the pain, I'm actually looking forward to getting this done - or at least the final result of feeling nothing. Was already in the process of getting a crown, and had the temp crown on, when it was determined I'd needed a root canal on this tooth. So, the crown part is an additional $1100 - also out of pocket since I don't have dental insurance. $2,410 total. I waited two years before getting the crown 'cause of the cost, and as a result of not taking action sooner, I need the root canal too. Lesson: Don't wait! |

| I was worried I was being billed too much until I read the prices posted here. My insurance paid $1000, which is my max for the year. The doctor's office even adjusted my cleaning charges to reflect their current "special" so I would have less out of pocket expense on the root canal. |

| I wanted one root canal, however the dental office told me that I could have two root canals since I was there and that for sure the insurance would pay for it, I based my decision in that information and went along with them. My copay was $150 that I paid right after the two root canals were done. Now the dental office is sending me a fat bill telling me that this was only an estimate. I feel that this was bait and switch, which is highly illegal ... Bait because they told me that the insurance will pay switch because now they are saying it was just an estimate. I think that there are so many different ways that the patient is scammed by dental office, all based in greed and more greed. In Mexico there are many dental offices that are have very high standard of hygiene, dentist trained in USA, good care, and they charge less than 1/3 of what many dental offices are charging in CA, of course you have to choose the right office, but even in the USA there are many States that charge much less than CA for dental care. Ask questions before having your dental work, don't trust "niceties", you could run in masters of deceptions, just to get you in the trap of scam you to the bone, overload your credit cards and brake you too if they can. |

| Which Tooth: #5 | Practitioner: Loma Linda Dental School |
| After an unpleasant and costly visit to a local dentist, I decided to finally listen to my mother (lesson #1) and call the closest dental school where my brother has been treating, Loma Linda. Because my tooth was diagnosed as abscessed, I was able to get an urgent care appointment. I went yesterday for the first time and am kicking myself for not having gone months ago (lesson #2). I've had horrible dental experiences in the past and have a debilitating fear of needles. For an extra $33, I was given nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and highly recommend it for anyone fearing dental procedures. I was initially scared to have a student working on me, but that fear went away immediately when I realized the supervising dentist was always within earshot and often checked the student's work. She wasn't the rookie I feared, but rather a very knowledgeable third year student. Despite loud remodeling work going on in the room, I was surprisingly relaxed even before being administered the laughing gas. They are excellent in putting a frightened person at ease. Each step during my visit was discussed with me, including the price of each procedure. I don't remember all the prices, but one x-ray was $19. I couldn't believe how communicative they were with me, as well as gentle and caring. I have 3 more visits to complete the root canal, which includes implanting a post in the tooth and the crown. My cost, since I have no insurance, will be approximately $1,000 (including the crown!) when I'm done, but because I pay for each procedure as it's completed, the price is spread out with each visit which makes it so much easier than coming up with the total at once. To become a regular patient, the waiting list is currently 5-6 mos. If one has a dental emergency, however, they are able to see a patient through their urgent care dept. I'm on the waiting list for regular dentistry and am looking forward to resolving the rest of my dental issues. Never thought I'd ever say that! |

| I feel that I've made a wrong career choice not going into dental school and instead medical school. For MDs, medicare/medicaid pay 30 cents on a dollar billed. Insurance pays a little more. That is the reason why there are not a lot of primary care doctors available presently and also our near future. More than 60% of the new gradutated doctors go into specialty most likely because of the above reason. My dentist charge total was $3800 and I have to pay $2000 with dental insurance. I still don't understand why it is so expensive. I am sure I am not the only one patient paying that much. And I don't know how others whom trying to make ends meet to pay for this kind of price. How are we going to fix medical care system with out fixing dental care as well? For me, I may go back to dental school so I would provide reasonable cost to patients both dental and medical as well. By the way, I heard most of the dentist in Little Saigon would charge patients minimal to nothing if they have insurance and negrotiate with them. May be that is another option for me to move to CA. |
