| Typical costs: | - Dental crowns (also called caps) cost $500-$3,000 a tooth, depending on materials, complexity, location, and the dentist's training and experience. Insurance may pay part of a crown's cost if it's obviously needed for medical reasons, but usually crowns are not covered.
- Crowns are made of gold, porcelain, resin or porcelain-fused-to-non-precious-metal; AboutCosmeticDentristry.com lists the pros and cons of each.
- AboutCosmeticDentistry.com estimates porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns average $580-$860 while gold ones run $600-$1,050. An all-porcelain or resin crown requires a higher level of skill, takes time and usually costs more.
What should be included: | - A tooth-shaped cap covers the entire surface of a tooth, adding strength, durability and stability. This usually requires two office visits; first to prepare the tooth, make an impression and install a temporary crown. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory to create the permanent crown, which is installed during the second appointment.
Additional costs: | - There's often an initial office visit ($65-$102) and X-rays ($13-$135) --average price estimates are from BracesInfo.com.
Discounts: | - Dental college clinics may offer reduced rates for services by supervised students or faculty; check DentalSite.com for school locations.
- Some dental groups pay partial fees for low-income patients; the American Dental Association lists state associations.
Shopping for a dental crown: | - Check the American Dental Association for members in your area. If you have dental insurance, the company will list approved dentists. eHow gives tips for finding a good dentist, including questions to ask.
- If calling to check prices, use the exact American Dental Association code number. For example, a crown cast in gold is ADA 02790. There are 16 different codes for types of crowns.

| I was caught by great surprise to learn my insurance capped out at $1,000. Each crown was approx $1,000 and one had to be built up at $250 - ridiculous. My front teeth were worn from brushing and had grooves, so he filled the grooves in with resin - no drilling, no numbing, but charged the price of a regular filling. I did receive a discount for that. Nevertheless, my remaining portion is about $1700.00. I'm devasated as I was not prepared for that large amount. I think they should advise their clients prior of costs to be incurred as a routine practice. Live and learn. |

The Dr and Asst. spent approx 50 min. I was in the chair 1.5 Hrs. At the end I was shown the bill my part $1200. No discussion up front, The
insurance "Covered" $300. Big deal... I was forced to pay before I left because of the "lab costs"..The Dr also wanted to remove a tooth
opposite of a missing tooth, saying it was moving and had/would caused bone loss in the upper jaw.
I refused to pull a healthy tooth. It would have doubled my bill and Id be homeless about now. |

can dentists be trusted?

| My previous two dentists looked me right in the eye and said all my back molars should be replaced with crowns because "after all, you have insurance"(!). None of the molars were causing any problem, by the way. Needless to say, I'm with another dentist now. However, he is telling me that I have a cavity in a back molar that has too many fillings so a crown is necessary. I don't really trust him ... or any dentist anymore. How can a patient know if there really is a cavity, and if the tooth is really unable to take another filling? |

I need 5 crowns right now since I have fractured 5 of my teeth - don;t know how that happened - maybe my age (46) or the fact that sometimes I clench while I am sleeping. I almost passed out with shock when the dentist told me I needed "5 crowns and quickly! Dental insurane hasn't changed since the 70's - I think it's high time it did!!!! Afterall paying a premium each month and then only being covered up to $1500.00 per year is really absurd! |

When I went to have my teeth cleaned, the dentist who took over the practice told me crowns only last 5 years. He also told me I needed a root canal & new crown on one tooth. |

| I went to my dentist because I had a filling that seemed to be warn down, I found out that I needed a crown, and could not do anymore fillings in that tooth. Needless to say, my insurance covers upto 1500 a year. so of course it would cost more than that and my out of pocket would be over $500. I asked to set my teeth cleaning and they told me that I used all of my coverage and would have to pay $243.00 for that. I thought 1 cleaning a year was covered, for preventative measures. what is this crap, I think this dentist is ripping people off, while you are in the chair, they find out how much coverage you have left and try to get you to do the work right there, but you must pay immediatly,so billing done. I am going to contact BBB on them, something is not right |

| Hi, I am a general dentist and found this site by accident. A couple comments and suggestions. Dentists are people. Most are honest some are not. To find one rely on referral from friends you trust. If you are not comfortable do yourself and the dentist a favor try someone else. Get a second opinion. Dentists have different philosophies concerning crowns. You can tell yourself if a tooth needs a crown generally. If the tooth is half filling it might need a crown. If it is 2/3 or more it does. Rarely must it have the crown today. If you feel pressured go somewhere else. A good dentist will want you to be sure prior to treatment. A good dentist will tell you the cost prior to treatment. That is good for you and the dentist. And one last thing some mexican dentists are good. Some are not just like us. Generally you get what you pay for in the world. |

| I went to an American corporate dentist. He said I needed four crowns with root canals and three fillings. Total cost $9200.00. Checked with my wife's dentist in Athens Greece, he thought maybe 750 Euros. We went to Greece. The greek dentist replaced two existing crowns filled four teeth and pulled one tooth he said was not worth saving. The american dentist wanted to do a root canal and cap on the uselees tooth. Total cost of Greek dentist $751.00 plus airfare for for three of $3030.00. Total savings $5,366.00 over the american corporate dentist. Lessons learned, look for a dentist with a small staff maybe himself or his wife. My greek dentist was a father and son operation without any other staff. The american corporate dentist had a huge staff including, receptionists office workers and technicians. In Greece need an x-ray go to a separate x-ray technician and pay 30 euros for a full mouth Xray. |

| Which Tooth: molar | Type of Crown: porcelein |
Looking at x-rays, dentist said I had a large area of decay on a molar and needed a filling. I'm in the chair, so numb I basically can't talk, and he drills away all the decay. THEN he shows me the x-ray and explains that because the area was so large and so close to the root, I really should have a root canal and get a crown rather than just a filling. HE HAD SEEN THE SIZE AND LOCATION WHEN HE MADE THE APPOINTMENT! After hearing that an all-porcelein crown ("the only kind we do, because they look more natural") would cost 860 after insurance, I opted for the filling. The dentist and assistant acted like I was a crazy person who had just decided to run around with a tooth open to the pulp cavity - they warned me to be "super careful" with the tooth, not to chew on that side, and urged me to contact them immediately if I felt any pain when the numbness wore off.
It may be true that I need a crown and root canal, and I may be risking pain and suffering by opting for the filling, but I really felt like they were hog-tying me by dropping that on me at that point. If/when I get more work done, I'm going to find another dentist. |

They should speak to their employer about increasing the benefit of the plan. Unfortunately, my company cannot afford to increase our benefit, which has been the same for about 20 years. My dentist is skilled and caring, and there's a good reason to do all this work, but, man, this is a huge dent in the pocketbook. |

I just got Delta Dental and basically it's an insurance discounter. For instance, if you want braces, it'll cost $2700. Visits are $5 and I believe a cleaning is like $20. So today I found out that I needed a root canal. I might not have to pay for it at all because I believe I get the DD discount and they can get my deductible ($1k per year) from Blue Shield. The office manager said it was a good idea to have 2 and my 2 insurance complements each other! DD is $97/year. Check it out...http://www.deltadentalins.com/ca_indiv/my_benefits.html
The other quote I got was $5k for a veneer instead of a crown. |

| Had a root canal, post & crown by a dentist I truly trusted & liked in Palm Harbor Fl. Four years later the tooth starts hurting bad. It turned out I had to go to the Endo who discovered I had a few roots in the tooth that were left undone or unseen and the tooth was not sealed properly. First time cost me cash $1700.00 second time cost me 418.00 cash and my dental insurance kicked in the 1100.00. Then I change dentists go to another for general maintance & bridges. I thought I could trust this one in Clearwater Fl. He was OK but his lab did really nasty looking bridges with the metal showing way to much. I expressed my concern and was told that is how they are done now a days. Looking at co workers who have beautiful smiles theirs look lovely. I asked for references but they only worked two days aweek and I couldn't get off work to go to those so I choose another from a reference. I am so now not trusting of dentists. Its a money making business in my eyes. Now I know why people just say pull the tooth out who could afford so many mistakes from so many dentists? |

Previous dentist said I need 2 crowns and 4 fillings $3000 since I had no ins. Found ins and had another exam, different dentist She said I need 5 new crowns and 2 old crowns replaced.Plus 2 cavities $5000. She simply doesn't want to do the fillings. She can make 4 to 5 times the money with crowns. They also charge $125 per crown extra because there are 7 of them. $70 per crown for molars. And $150 for gold.
My paln is to have my previous dentist do the fillings this new destitist doesn't want to do. And let the new dentist do the 2 both agree on.
Same think last time I had ins. they want to pust the limits and do the things the most expensive way for the patient.
U simply can't afford to had my teeth fixed her way. |

| I feel I have been ripped off big time. I went to a new dentist that offered "gentle dentistry." They convinced me to go under sedation because I had so much work to be done. They gave me a root canal and bridgework, but then tried to pressure me into sedation for a simple filling and I said no. They got angry with me for refusing, and the office manager actually cornered me while I was in the chair, mouth propped open, and demanded to know WHY I did not want to have the other procedures done THAT DAY. I really felt pressured and decided never to go back. BUT, that was not until they got me for $16,000 -- only $3,000 covered by insurance. So now I'm stuck with this Care Credit bill for $13,000 -- unbelievable -- it's bankrupting me, and I don't even feel that much was done for me. Not sure who to report this to -- anyone know??? |

| I went in for a cleaning, they told me my gums were in very good shape, I must floss, which I do. Then the dentist came in with X-rays, said I needed a root canal, crown, resin on one, and extract a wisdom tooth. I had not experienced any pain. They started at $2400 and I got them down to 1800 in the room. Then when I was leaving another dentist told me if I did not have the work done soon I could have a painful abses, I told him $1800 was too high, he offered it for $1500, if I had it done within the next two months. So I would have time to have another dentist give me his opinion. I asked if they could do it then, they said yes, So I decided to get it done without a second opinion. (It's difficult for me to get a day off.) I was in the chair for about three hours, and now they tell me I have to come back in two weeks. But how would one know if they really need the work done without that 2nd opinion? As I didn't have any pain, I'm thinking I may have just been taken. The $1559 included the cleaning x-rays and all the work. I really miss that xtra $1500! |

Broken Crowns

| Which Tooth: #32 | Type of Crown: Porcelain |
I originally had a crown that I paid $850 (of course, I was not with my dental insurance for the amount of time that they would restrict till they would cover, at minimum, 50%) put in 4 1/2 years ago. Last month it cracked in half. My dentist tried to save me some money by repairing the crown with composite material ($125 vs $800)but it didn\'t hold, so now I am probably going to have to spend ANOTHER $800.
My dentist, luckily, is only charging me the lab fees and he is going to try to get the majority of that out of my insurance (good luck - they only cover 25%), but I\'ll probably still end up paying the bulk. I\'m tired of getting screwed over by dental insurance and their \"limits\" and the raising every couple of months of my deductable (now up to $2000/year - why bother).
I have so much dental work that needs to be done, but I cannot afford to and the two local dental schools in my area are more than 4 hours away from me. I appreciate the help my dentist is giving me, but he\'s taking this at a loss because he will not be recouped for HIS time.
The insurance industry in the US is a joke. They need to be regulated to the hilt. And socialized health care isn\'t the answer - just look at people in Europe\'s teeth. They\'re FAR worse than ours. Insurance companies will do whatever they can to pay as little coverage, charge astronomical fees to employers and employees and pay executives OUTRAGEOUS salaries. |

\"Deep Cleaning\"

| Posted by: Jess12344 in Franlin, ME. | Purchased: 2008 |
| I went to Embassy Dental in Franklin, TN and had a \"special\" treatment done by the hygenist, this treatment came highly \"recommended\" by the dentist who said it prevented serious decay and gingivitis and would even improve my stomach aches. Right. Two days later I had a horrible abcess and pain in one of my molars, and they emphatically denied the cleaning had anything to do with it. This same office had me remove all of my wisdom teeth because they claimed that I had a tooth with a bad infection in it that would be lost unless I removed them. I removed them and now my tooth grinding is much much worse and now my bite is completely off. They are now suggesting I go to a prosthodontist and get practically all my molars re-crowned, a dental implant and the list goes on. The estimate? Oh, about thirty grand. What the hell is going on in this country? I feel duped and I feel like crying everytime I think about all that my mouth and wallet will go through just so I can have a normal life. Appalling. |

he didn't promise that the crown would hold for long because there was very little left of my tooth. it lasted 2 years my tooth broke off and now i need a implant so im going back to mexico have it done and spend less than a 1,000.00 including airfare. all i can say is that if you don't have insurance you are shit out of luck thank god i know a very good dentist in mexico. |

Dentists in General

| Which Tooth: all | Type of Crown: |
Took my dear daughter when she was about 5 years old to several dentists in Plano, TX. Did this with purpose of "checking" and validating their comments against each other.
About 20 yrs ago read an article in Readers Digest that had described how the reporter went to about 7 different dentists and received different reports / diagnoses and of course different estimates.
One of the dentists wanted to pump my daughter full of his "cocktail" which was a potent mixture of drugs and would cost at least $ 1,000. I put the kibosh on that and others who claimed everyone in my family has mouthfuls of cavities.
Their business is very competitive and not enough volume / business to go around to support the glut of dentists in this country. Schools graduate WAY MORE dentists than MDs.
Why is the suicide rate of dentists so high compared to other professions??
For now I am avoiding ALL dentists myself and hope for the BEST. If I end up with a set of dentures by time I'm 50 YRS old, then so be it and I managed to save a lot of cash in the process.

| Went to dentist for emergency dental treatment (was in extreme pain). Dentist said tooth was cracked and referred me to an Endodontist (specializes in molars). Endo did a root canal--explained the whole procedure, in's and out's, but never once talked to me about cost OR payment options. Before I left I was told that I had to pay $225 RIGHT THEN. My HSA was tapped (end of the year-nothing left/budgeted for) so I ate that amount. Now it's January and I HAD to get the crown buildup, of course, and that bill came to $993 with my out-of-pocket roughly half. I had to pay the first half of the out-of-pocket as a "deposit" and the second half 3 1/2 weeks later when they actually "seated" the crown. Can't submit first half deposit to HSA because they don't give itemized bills until after the crown is seated. Now I have to eat that money until I can submit it for reimbursement. I was never offered a choice in what kind of crown I could get either. I agree with other folks who have said that dental insurance plans need to be changed. I'd rather pay more for dental and have a better plan than basically pay for everything myself (save $1500/year). |

I finally got my girlfriend to go to the dentist. She had a major cleaning done, many other cavities and two front teeth that were broken when she fell at home tripping over her 5 year old's toys. The cost for this was outrageous in the U.S. so I convinced her to go with me on a short trip to Mexico (Guadalajara, not the border - Guad is the 2nd largest city of Mexico replete with excellent universities and dentistry schools). I got her to go with a collegue and friend of my personal dentist (who is in a small city further south).
Total cost for all the work, just under $400 USD from a University of Guadalajara educated dentist with more than 15 years of experience and continuous training (she also teaches at the university). And we got to enjoy a trip in a warmer climate with no rain. Don't use U.S. dentists. Many will just try to use up your insurance and try to convince you that you need work that is unnecessary. The ethical dentists are harder and harder to find in California. |

WARNING! Stay away from JEB Dental in Nuevo Progreso, MX. There are hundreds of dentists in this small town across the border from Weslaco, TX,
and I picked one that ended badly: Jose Bocanegro extracted a molar which was replaced by a 3-piece crown (crown, fake tooth, wire wrap) about 17 months
ago. Three days later it came loose because of a poor cement job. 16 months later the whole thing came out, but this time from the base up. I returned for a repair to be told by the son (David) also a dentist, that the anchoring tooth had decayed so badly, it could not be saved. Although I was told they guarantee their work, I was still partially charged for the 4-piece replacement. I refused to pay the full amount.
I will talk to an attorney the next I'm there.
I flew to Ecuador for dental work about 4yrs
ago. Found a dentist who also makes his own crowns & for other dentists. He did a great job,
and there have been no problems with any of the 7
crowns he made & installed. Cost: $90/crown
TO ALL SEEKING CHEAPER DENTAL CARE: Even with insurance the costs in this country are outrageous! It is well worth your time to seek
dental care OUTSIDE the US. Combine it with a vacation, and you can right the cost (or part of it)off your taxes. This amounts to an almost free vacation.
I've read all the posts here, and only 2 have included the names of dentists recommended
in Mexico. So, if you have had treatment which is
recommendable, please include names & contact info, please. It's damned hard to find any sites
that provide anything but a list of dentists & what they do. Don't be afraid to get reasonably
priced dental care outside the US. But remember, there are good & bad dentists here as well as the other side of our border.
I drive 940 miles each way to find an affordable dentist. If you want more info, provide an email address, and I'll respond. |

I have no gum bleeding, swelling, redness...so no need to the the surgical deep dive to clean teeth. He is removing existing crowns to recrown...
Isn't there an ethical body that watches these crooks? thank you very much I'll take my gum disease, crown replacements and walk down the street to find a dentist to fix the two minor chipped front teeth! What's with replacing crowns and pulling a crowned tooth? Didn't do the work. This was after a previous dentist cancelled my new patient appt because I didn't call back right away with insurance subscriber number!!! |

Of course being a big whimp I opt for the IV sedation of $450.00. Now add this together and my cost is $1050.00 per the dentist. This does not seem right when per my insurance booklet they cover 75% of the crown not including the sedation. I feel I am being taken for a ride. Can you enlighten me please? |

| the overwhelming majority of dentists are into making money from vulnerable patients. If you can document the abuse or malpractice you can bring the case before the Dental Association which can not inforce good practice, just recommends. Or you can bring the documented case to the State Dental Board which can even revoke the Dental License. Americans have been abused for the longest time by Dentist, Physicians and Lawyers. It is time to stop them. They have been license to Serve the People, and by doing so they can make a decent living. Ripping people off is not the reason to be licensed. Crowns shouldn't be more than $500 root canal not more than $500. Dentist should give a full counseling to their patients and they should be given ample time to decide and to consult second opinion. Do Not trust any dentist, they are sweet and nice while they bankrupt people in distress, perpetuating their credit card problems. |

2. For an Implant $8,500.00

| Which Tooth: First molar | Type of Crown: Porcelain |
For all those getting screwed, make sure you read articles on selecting a dentist. You need to go in, look around, ask about the practice, patients, and prices before you opt to make them YOUR dentist. My dentist and the complete staff are VERY good, caring, and open about everything. There should be almost NO pressure in most circumstances. Realize also Mexico is cheaper because the cost of living is cheaper. US dentists aren\'t trying to screw you, but their living (and the staff they pay) cost significantly more. Finally, before you opt to get your teeth pulled, realize you lose significant bone mass in your jaw when you do this, even if you get an implant immediately after. This is why most dentists will urge you to get a root canal and crown to save the tooth if it is possible (and it\'s usually cheaper and healthier than pulling and getting an implant or a bridge).
Anyway, just make sure you find a dentist who discloses ALL the procedures and prices BEFORE any operation. All my dentists have because I do my research first. |

For at least the past 10 years I have had bi-annual cleanings/xrays for $5 at a dental hygiene college so what a shock yesterday to go back to my regular dentist and pay $815 for a crown & x-ray. Porcelaine was the same as gold.
With my mouth wide open she explained what the broken upper molar needed & before she proceeded I asked the cost or it would not have been given to me and the shock would have come as I checked out when they demanded payment in full before receiving the permanent crown.
I have had orthodontic & root canal work done at the dental school here, but they do not do crowns.
Quite a few years ago I called around to at least a dozen dentists about some dental work I needed and prices only varied by 5 bucks or so. Wow...where\'s the free enterprise system, competition!!
I get my eyeglasses in Germany & they laugh at our complicated system. Think I am going to check out the dentists the next time I am there. |

I\'m having work done on 13 teeth, 2 porcelain fused to metal crowns, 4 gold crowns and 7 posterior composite fillings to replace old fillings. Now, from what I have been reading this would be like a 20,000.00 job. I\'m very fortunate that my insurance coverage is 2000.00 per year and by splitting it between the last quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010 I will have 4000.00 covered by insurance. His total charge is 7725.00 My total out of pocket expense will be 3725.00. That\'s an average of 286.53 per tooth. Not bad in dental dollars. All new dr\'s goal is to become a millionaire by age 30. now I see dentists are even worse. My wife needs a bridge but for now having her existinfg crown reglued is good for now, but the dentist continues to glue with ttemporary glue that doe not last a week. And he is pressuring her to do the bridge. She is trying other dentistst. They are all charging large amounts of money for procedures. The bad economy has forced people to forgo dental appointments and they are not making the money they used to make. So in turn they are not realy caring what is happening to people and are looking out for Number 1. They are making people suffer until they conform to what they charge. This is going on all over the Country. Watch out people, always ask the dentist the cost, and if they wwill not tell you then do not let them do anything until they do. |
