| Typical costs: | - Standard DVD players, which are all you need if you are one of the 80 percent of households that owns an analog television, cost on average from $30 to $170. The quality range is pretty narrow, with most players offering good to excellent picture quality.
- The basic DVD players in the $30 to $70 range tend to have fewer features, while higher-priced players are more likely to have progressive scan video output, which creates a crisper picture on a digital TV; super audio CD (SACD) capabilities, which allow it to play new high-fidelity audio discs; multiple disc play; well-designed remote controls and user-friendly on-screen displays.
- DVD players that have gotten good reviews include the Phillips DVP3140/37, a $40 basic dvd player; the Phillips DVP5960/37, a $65 budget upconverting player, meaning it is compatible with high-definition television.
- The $170 OPPO DV-980H offers sleek design, upscaling to 1080p over HDMI and can be made region-free to play DVDs from Europe and Asia.
|
| What should be included: | - Most standard DVD players come with a remote control and include digital sound, programmability and capability to play audio CDs. Some players include multi-disc capabilities.
|
| Additional costs: | - If you need an HDMI cable, a special cable that can carry high-definition video and digital audio at once, it can cost up to $60 or more, depending on the length.
|
| Discounts: | - Tip: Look for manufacturer rebates or retailer sales.
|
| Shopping for a dvd player: | - Tip: If you are thinking of getting a high-definition television in the future but are not ready to purchase an HD or Blu-Ray DVD player, consider an upconverting player, which is much cheaper but supports high-definition images.
- Tip: You can probably find the best deals at a reputable online retailer such as Amazon.com, J&R.com. If you prefer to buy in person, you will also find low prices at big box retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City.

Surprised at how much an old-style DVD Player cost
|
| Posted by: slow adopter in Campbell, CA. | Purchased: October, 2007 |
| Brand: JVC | Model: XV-N652 |
| Store: Frys |
| My old Panasonic DVD player finally kicked it (after 7 years), so I had to get a new one. I needed a DVD player that had optical audio and component video output, and Consumer Reports recommended the JVC especially because I play VCDs. While it seems very solid (and is ultra slim and has an HDMI output in case I ever get an HD TV), I was surprised that it still costs 80 bucks for a DVD player that is otherwise pretty similar to the one I got 7 years ago. While the DVD video and audio quality is very good, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't noticeably better than the DVD player I got 7 years ago. Maybe I've maxed out what non-HD can do? |
