Multifunction inkjet printers (MFPs), also called all-in-one printers, print in color and black and white, as well as copy, scan and fax documents. Some multifunction printers have an integrated fax modem, enabling users to fax hard copies as they would with a regular fax machine, while others fax through the computer. In addition, some models offer dedicated photo-printing capabilities or the ability to make double-sided prints.

Typical costs:
  • Budget-priced inkjet multifunction printers cost $100 -$200. The $100 Canon Pixma 180 is a well-reviewed choice that doesn't feature faxing capabilities. Other more full-featured products include the $150 -$200 Dell Photo All-In-One 966 Printer and the $200 Kodak EasyShare 5300. Both. Not all printers will be compatible with both Windows and Macs.
  • Mid-level MFPs cost $200 -$300. They are typically network ready, so users don't have to buy additional network cards, and include faxing capabilities and compatibility with both Macs and Windows PCs. Many include built-in automatic documen
  • Higher-end inkjet multifuction printers start at $300 -$400. They typically offer excellent speed and quality for text and photo printing that rivals more costly laser printers. They often feature built-in wired and wireless networking, a boon for laptop users. Paper trays are larger, as are scan areas, so the printers can scan legal-size pages. Some offer digital answering machines, while others provide the ability to print directly from cameras and view prints from an LCD screen before printing. Three well-reviewed choices are the Canon Pixma MP960, the HP Officejet Pro L7680 and the Brother MFC-845cw.
What should be included:
  • Color and black and white print cartridges.
  • Photo and printer software.
Additional costs:
  • Replacement ink cartridges ($17 -$35). Note that a replacement black cartridge will yield approximately 750 sheets while color will yield 400 sheets.
  • Paper for photo printing ( $20 for 120 sheets).
  • USB printer cable to connect to computer ($10).
  • Network cards ($80).
  • Duplex (double-sided) printing accessories ($79).
  • Vendors that offer a wide variety of printer supplies include Supplies USA , Amazon.com and Data Bazaar.
Discounts:
  • Prices for printers vary widely, so it pays to shop around. If shopping online, factor shipping costs into the total price. If buying locally, it may be helpful to bring a printout of an advertised online price to see if the merchant can match it. In some cases, prices at a store can be higher than what is advertised on the store's website.
Shopping for a multifunction inkjet printer:
  • Check prices at online retailers such as Amazon.com and JR.com.
  • If easier returns are a priority, consider buying a printer at a local electronics store such as CompUSA or Best Buy.
