Tire rotation can help extend the life of your tires. According to Meineke Car Care, an out-of-balance tire can affect ride quality and shorten the life of tires, bearings, shocks and other suspension components.

Typical costs:
  • Rotation costs $20 to $30, but should be included with balancing. Balancing tires costs an average of $12 per tire.
  • Balancing tires every time they are rotated may not be necessary. Car experts Tom and Ray Magliozzi believe that tires already in balance tend to stay in balance. They suggest having your tires rebalanced only if you feel a shimmy or vibration, or if the tires have been re-mounted on different rims.
What should be included:
  • Mounting and balancing are often included when you purchase new tires. Some tire retailers also include lifetime rotations, balancing and flat repairs.
Discounts:
  • If your tires are already being removed for another service, like brake repair, it may make sense to also rotate your tires.
Shopping for wheel balancing:
  • If you take your vehicle to a dealership for routine service and maintenance, rotation will typically be included. Most carmakers call for tire rotation every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Check your owner's manual for suggested mileage for rotation.
  • Tire shops like Goodyear and Discount Tire typically provide wheel balancing and tire rotation. Many Costco locations that have tire service centers also rotate and balance tires.

No charge for the balancing but I got a high mileage oil change with tire rotation ($42.56 net). I bought all my tires there and paid for lifetime rotation/balancing. I don't know if the lifetime program is worth it but it certainly feels good when you don't have to pay.
