Typically a long and complicated process that involves extensive labor costs. Many transmissions on late model cars last until the vehicle goes to the junkyard. Others may fail after as little as 80,000 miles.

Typical costs:
  • Replacing a transmission can run $1,800-$3,500. Costs vary from one make and model to another, generally speaking, the more you paid for the car, the more you are likely to spend on replacing the transmission.
  • Prices also vary depending on prevailing labor costs. If workers tend to be paid less than average in your area, you may find lower prices.
What should be included:
  • Remove and replace transmission, which includes removing drive axles and/or drive shaft.
  • Limited warranty.
Discounts:
  • Some repair shops offer discounts for AAA members.
Shopping for replacing a transmission:
  • Find a reputable repair shop and proceed with caution when using bargain specials from unknown mechanics.
  • Find a mechanic before you need one. Do your research and locate a mechanic you trust before you actually need servicing, so you aren't stuck with the first mechanic you find during a time of need.
  • If you don't already have a mechanic, look for mechanics who are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Search for ASE certified Blue Seal repair facilities.
  • Check with your state consumer affairs department or The Better Business Bureau to see if the shop has generated a lot of consumer complaints.

This is the quote for labor/new transmission (tax not included). The car is in excellent condition with 100,000 miles just coming up and we bought it in 2005. Question: Should we proceed with a new transmission or consider another used car that would be an unknown factor given the price range we want $6000.00. We are retired and easy driving. I have taken care of the Buick and it is a luxury model, leather, etc.
Dealer mechanic says car reflects good maintenance and looks good. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have a 2001 MDX (single owner - me) that had it's original transmission replaced right around the time of the expiration of the original warranty. Was making noises; dealer looked at it and replaced it for free so my guess was there was a design flaw as this was the 1st year Acura made an SUV.

It has been running great since but recently the check engine light went on and they think only a sensor needs replacing. if that does not work, they say I'll need a new transmission.

My Q is this - shouldn't a transmission last more than 5 years and perhaps 50,000 miles or is there no hard/fast rule? If I do have it replaced, is there generally some warranty period associated with it to protect your investment at least a while? Thanks.

My husband took my car to get an oil change at Firestone. They told him I needed my transmissions look at and he took it to A+ transmissions. These guys lied to us about everything. From when he left the car they closed early and everything. They broke my transmission down without permission. They told me they where going to do everything on my budget. When they got threw my cost went from$400 to $2,500. I was so mad. My transmission was not that bad. They rebuilt my transmission with the same parts I had. My car is worser than it was before my husband took it to them. Is there anything I can do. I know they screwed me. I just want to take it to someone or a diffrent branch to get my car fixed. Every time you press the gas to pull off the car jerks and when it switch gears it jerks. Wasn't even doing that at first.

I was traveling through Chattanooga returning home to Illinois when my engine light came on. The codes read problems with the transmisssion so I stopped at Mastertek Transmissions and was told I needed the transmission rebuilt and it would take 4 days and $2862. 19 days later I recieve a phone call telling me I need to sign a document stating that I'm getting a computer for no charge in order for the shop to release the Jeep to me. After reading through the document, I discover: 1-the computer is used, 2-they recinded the warranty, and 3-it is a waiver of my rights to seek damages for their negligence while working on the Jeep. "Transmission repair $3314.54 & in return for customer to take this vehicle as-is full and final settlement we never have to see or here about the vehicle again".

Most of the reason why people pay so much for there vehicles to get fix is that they don't take care of them. If you do the proper maintenance on your vehicle you wont have the large repairs that you have. There is no reason why you cant catch things before they happen. Transmission problems well have started way before they transmission dies. Oil Leaks are a first sighs of engine problems. Or even a different haze of smoke out of your tail pipe. If people would check there vehicles once a week for signs of issues and noses they would save themselves a lot of money. People need to realize there vehicles need to be maintained, and not to expect them just to work. And people also need to realize that when you buy a used vehicle you are buying someone else s problem. That means you need to face the reality that you are going to have to fix something. That is why you get the USED car inspected before you buy it. Come on people this is not rocket science.
