MAACO Low Cost?

| I call MAACO for an estimate to paint my 1966 Mustang, the car is already primed and ready for paint, no other work would be needed, I did request for the estimate to include the door jams and only wanted it painted gray, no special color. Their estimate was $1500.00 and more charges could occur, So I would not consider MAACO to be a low cost chain. |

I had my car painted at a Maaco in Minnesota. They were running a half off special on their $500 paintjob. They also had me pay around $200 for prep (sanding, primer.. etc). I dropped the car off and would told it would be ready by the end of the week. A few days go by and around the time I'm expecting to be contacted to pick it up.. I hear nothing. I give them a call and they tell me it will be done the next day. On that day I get a call from them and the receptionist explains that the paint was not sticking to the car and the whole paint job needed to be done over again.. but it would be ready in 2 days. When the Monday rolls around I have to call in and they tell me it will be done the next day.
I went to pick it up on Tuesday and it looked pretty good. I was actually quite impressed and satisfied. Flash forward one month and spots of rust that weren't on the car before are starting to creep through. The rear quarters are rusty, the bottom of the door is rusty and a spot on the hood is starting to rust.
I have not returned to Maaco, but I highly doubt their 1-2 year warrenty that came along with the paintjob will be honored. I can only imagine what they really did when painting it.. I know I drove by a few times during the week and could see my car partially stripped down sitting outside near the snow.
I also got my car back with a dead battery. |

| Car Make: Nissan | Car Model: Altima |
| Painter: Kendall Toyota Collision |
| As explained to me by their techs, the complete car (2000 Altima) would have to be stripped down from all it's molding and ornaments and replaced with new ones. This includes (not new) front and rear glass. Door window mouldings after almost 9 years would obviously need replacement as well as the windows front and back. Head lamps would need replacement (not included but 140 a pop). This also invloves removal of both bumpers to paint properly. Also includes the replacment of all four mudflaps. I truly believe that they would do a great job since they did work on another car of mine and I experienced that they are real professionals. They explained this is the proper way to repaint any vehicle which to me was obvious. AND WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY! |

| Car Make: Ford | Car Model: Taurus |
| Painter: Maaco |
I was looking to give my car that new look again. I had a little rust on the rear fender and some scratches thats all. So of course I fell for the Maaco ads and headed over. After talking to the manager they seemed like they knew what they were doing. He said that they would cut out the rusted area and weld in a new section, so I agreed to the work. It went down hill after that, the job was to take 5 days it took 9. My car was matador red when I got there it was some so called black cherry want to be a Ford red. I was told they don't make my color anymore. Then I noticed all the name plates (Taurus,24val, ect.) were not installed, that would be extra. Now here in Michigan Maacos warranty is 90 days. And they must have paid some lab alot of money to determine how long it would take for their workmanship to fall apart. Because on the 92 day rust popped out on the rear fender where that peice was suppost to be replaced, And today the paint looks like SHIT!!!
And if anyone suggest using Maaco that person is no friend and I suggest BEATING THEIR ASS!!!!! |

maaco misleading and incompetent

| Car Make: Mitsubishi | Car Model: Eclipse |

| Don't take your car to Maaco, especially the one at 6601 Old Cheney in Orlando. They'll tell you one thing then do another, and when you point it out or object, they will insult you and yell (literally). Horrible, horrible place. Plus, the paint blisters after about 3 months. When you take it in to be fixed under warranty, they'll put all the blame on you. When I took it in for the original $1500.00 paint job, I was told that it would all be sanded down and primed to be like new. They just painted over the old paint. Of course the person who was there the first time isn't there any more. When I picked it up and wanted them to pay for a rental car, they refused, saying it was a "limited warranty". My friend pointed out that it should have been done the first time, and they should pay for the rental car. They refused. They said that the car already had four coats of paint, and it's going to blister. When I told them what their employee had told me, they pointed to a sign and said, "Does it say anywhere on that sign that we'll sand it?" They refused to acknowledge that their counter person had explained that to me, which he hadn't, and in fact said the opposite. These people are awful, and Maaco is poorly represented by them. |

| The long and short is that if you have a car in pristine condition, no bodywork whatsoever, no rust, and no trim or decals to remove, expect to pay no less than $1500 for a good paintjob. Bodywork, trim, rust, etc... $2000+. I do this for myself for a living, and I get slackjaws day in and day out who want a foose job at a maaco price. Get real. I have over $10000 in equpiment to paint, that doesn't include my spray booth. |

Besides the ruff body work, overspray and orange peel , the mechanical work was criminal. Lugs, finger tight, suspension literally falling apart, missing bolts.
There was many issues with this job beyond belief.
If you do go to Burien Macco and there's anything mechanical done. Be sure you go straight to a reputable mechanic to get your car safe before driving too far.. ( warning True ) |

Maaco "We are not Perfect"
|
| Posted by: Karl Dresdner in Trenton Maaco, NH. | Purchased: 2009 |
| Car Make: Chevrolet | Car Model: Malibu 1981 |
| Painter: Macco in Trenton , N.J. |
The car had traces of rust on tyop edges of trunk and everywhwere else I had small rust sopts that I had sanded and painted before going to Maaco.
Paiod Maaco to strip car upper body and remove any rust. There was only trace rust I knew. I also paid to have two wide black stripes run down top center of car.
MAACO FUCKED UP THE STRIPING. Stripes were painted two inches off center in back although in center in front of car. Sripe being off center is very visible at the trunk key lock. I measured the errors which included stripe width changes by over an inch, 2 inch position errors and stripe slanting.
Maaco got the silver paint on the chrome bumpers and trim all over the car.
The trunk has a spot of rust ther side of a dime just 1 week after when trunk sas supposidly stripped and sanded. I went back to Maaco oto get things corrected and was told essentially to fuck off.
Showed Manager with a diagram the errors in the striping. He said "I feel sorry for you."
I said "Your painter must have been drunk." He said I was being inappropriate. Manager said "We are not perfect and see we wrote that on your contract."
Maaco does a bait and switch. Gets you there and changes the cost and lowers there promise of quality. The contract says "high quality" but that isd a total misrepresentation.
Maaco warrantee says I get 90 days for paint peeling or defects but years for paint fading. Obviously they are not going to honor any warrenty.
I weish I had seen this site before I let Maaco paint my car in such a careless manner. NOW I HAVE TO WORRY THAT THE PAINT IS GOING TO FALL OFF ??? |

You can find guys such as myself who work for the body shops that will do it on the side for about half the price.what you dont realize is the time put into a paintjob with two guys working on a car with no body repair sandiing the paint taping spraying and then wet sanding and buffing is about 60 hours of work 30 hours per person. that is not even including prep and paint of the door jams and engine if the color is to be changed. even at 10 dollars an hour plus materials you are looking at 1500 and good luck finding someone that actually know what they are doing to work for 10 an hour |

MAACO Quality and customers expectations

Where to start? First you must remember that all MAACO Centers are franchised. This means simply that quality will very widely from shop to shop. It is a fact that close to 98% of MAACO franchisees had no experience in the body shop business prior to owning a MAACO.
The paint used in almost every shop is either Dupont or Sherwin Williams, both very good paint materials, with 4 grades to choose from. The yearly 1/2 price special is not one of the top choices you can make at MAACO, with at least 3 other better grades to choose from.
About a gallon of Ready To Spray paint is needed on average to paint a car, outside only. The entrance level of Dupont and SW materials for a gallon of RTS material ranges between $90-140.00 at the shops cost. (does not include sealer, primer, sand paper, masking paper and tape or labor). Let's say you pay $200.00 for a low end basic paint job. Subtract $80.00 for paint materials, approx. $60.00 for labor, $18.00 for sand paper etc. and you can see there is little money to pay any advertising fees, franchise fees, (here it would be $16.00, 8% of sales), secretary, owners and estimators salary, comp insurance, building insurance, electric and gas, telephone, hazardous removal charge.
continued next ... too many words! |

As a former executive with MAACO Enterprises, as well as the former owner of MAACO in Gardena and also in Corona Ca. I can tell you there are good and bad shops in the chain. While MAACO can't make the owner turn out good quality, they have done a remarkable job of maintaining a chain that as a rule does great work at a fair price. Yes, you can pay a lot more and in some cases it is worth it. As long as you stick with either the 2 stage paint services or the polyurethane single stage, you will at least start with great material, then it is up to the shop to prep the car correctly and lay the paint down nicely, there is nothing more you can do. HOWEVER prior to leaving your car at MAACO check out the quality of finished jobs. Look for paint on the chrome, glass, undercarriage. Look for big chips and scratches that were painted over. Ask what price job you are looking at. The best place to inspect a paint job is under fluorescent lighting. All MAACO paint jobs should look very shiny and smooth, little of no texture (orange peel)
Ask if they do work for used car dealers. Get a list and call the used car manager and ask him what he thinks. Ask if they are preferred providers for any insurance companies, what we call DRP's.Check with Consumer Affairs, BBB, and here on the internet.
Be wise. Understand that paint jobs can't make a car rust. Understand that you may get what you pay for and if you have a Chevy pocket book and a Cadillac taste go elsewhere. All paint jobs chip if hit hard enough, period. No paint fades in 2 weeks. All advertising clearly states priced as low as. This does not mean any car, any condition is only... come on you guys, get real, take a little responsibility for your decisions and always shop around. I am happy to answer any questions, just use MAACO as the subject line. I am semi-retired after 32 years in the Auto Painting industry and seem to have more time than I expected. So here it is 9 yrs later with some dents and rust, and flat black. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences. I was considering Maaco but after reading your postings I say Hell to the No! My boyfriend has a buddy at work who details cars on the side and has hooked up his own car. I want to see his work first though. |

| ok, just to give you a guys some quick knowledge, Im a certified refinish tech for many high end luxury and exotic vehicles as well as a restoration tech. i only use the highest quality paints but just for giggles let me help you understand what materials cost me, not you, but me only a top quality job using only the finest of materials. lets take a standard mid sized car like an altima, 1 gal of clear with hardener and reducer $540, basecoat with reducer, pearl red the most expensive, 4 qts with reducer, $800, sealer with hardener and reducer 2 quarts, $290, thats roughly a little more than 1600 for just paint, no sand paper, bondo for body work, tape, masking paper, normal shop supplies. labor for de trimming the car and paint and buffing should run about 3500 to 4500 assuming no body work, oxidization, deep scratches or chips, rust. so a top quality paint job for a car that has decent paint and doesnt need to be stripped should cost you 5000 to 6000. anyone that says they use the best materials and is charging less than 3500 is clearly lying. and if the car is being completely stripped expect to pay 12k plus. im done |

| Problems can be avoided if you as the customer take the time to research who you are allowing to do body work to your car. The Better Business bureau has a great website that allows you to quickly see if the Maaco is bogus and just because it carries the franchise name does not mean it is accredited by the BBB. In my case I found a Maaco near me that has a A+ rating by the BBB with few if not any customer complaints which means they stand by there work and strive for quality. All Maaco's are not bad its just the ownership and employees of some of these franchises. Reasearch the business before committing to allow them to work on your vehicle! |

When my car was glossy black my car look almost new after i got it painted at maaco it looked much older. I examined the car and the job was done so poorly you could so tell that the car had been painted and not by professionals. when i opened the doors and trunk i could see silver paint sprayed inside. PLUS after a couple of weeks the paints started peeling off. SO NOT SATISFIED. VERY BAD EXPIRIENCE. I wished i would of never painted it and gone to Maaco. Also they just painted the car over the paint it already had and when it started to peel you could see the black and the silver. it looks horrible thanks to Maaco |

| I AGREE WITH RICK DUERR WHO USE TO WORK FOR MAACO. THERE ARE SOME BAD FRANCHISES AND GOOD ONES. I HAD 4 CARS PAINTED AT MAACO WITH GREAT RESULTS. I DID REMOVE CHROME AND OTHER ITEMS, AND ALSO STRIP AS MUCH WAXED AS I COULD FROM THE FINISH. THEY ARE NOT TAKING YOUR CAR DOWN TO BARE METAL. THEY ARE SANDING IT FOR ADHESION. COME ON GUYS, YOUR NOT GOING TO GET A GREAT JOB FOR $400-$500. DO A LITTLE WORK. THE PAINT THEY USE IS GOOD. DON\'T PICK THE LOWER TWO THOUGH. BE PROACTIVE LIKE HE SAID AN LOOK AT THEIR WORK AND DO SOME PREPPING YOURSELF. FOR UNDER $1,500 YOU CAN HAVE A NICE LOOKING CAR IF YOU HELP OUT. IF IT HAS RUST, CHANCES ARE, IT WILL RUST AGAIN AS WELL, UNLESS SANDED TO BARE METAL & TREATED, BUT EVEN THAT\'S NO GUARANTEE. JACK |

Unlike most here, I had a good experience at a Maaco. I had my daughters Grand Cherokee painted at the Branch in Hiram Ga, just to change the color.
I never intended to get the "cheap deal", and was always going with the "supreme" two stage process. While there were extras on the "package" price, (SUV's cost more, plus re-badging), the manager went through this with me beforehand.
The door jambs were not repainted, only external work, but I had no overspray issues, and four and a half years (over 20,000 miles) later, the paint still looks good. It's outlasted what I expected from a lower end respray, and I'm happy.
From my experience, and what I've read here, it looks as though there are good Maaco branches, & bad, and it appears as though the bad far outnumber the good.
I was lucky to get one of the good ones. |

| I am rebuilding a Jeep Wrangler YJ and I am at the point now where I am looking into paint jobs. I was looking into MAACO because the price seemed right, but after reading the reviews I think I will save for a few more months and get a quality paint job done by a quality company. I didn’t put all that time, hard work and money into my jeep so my wife and I can go rolling around town I in a high quality 4X4 that looks like a POS. |

Maaco Crest Hill Illinois

| You need to visit the maaco near you and ask to see some finished work. These guys in crest Hill were very helpful and explained the process and grades of paint. NOT ALL MAACOS ARE THE SAME. They showed me some relly nice restoration work they did on some 70's cars. Yes they can paint a car for $400 or so. this an inexpensive enamel. I got a base coat clear coat Viper red that looked great. Another body shop quoted me $3000 for the same work. The car is only worth $5k.....how stupid would that be? |

| called first to the maaco in rosemead ca. and they would not give me a quote of how much it would cost to paint my car. but they did tell me since this maaco had just opened up, they have a special of 249.oo. when it went over there they added and added coming to a total of 600.00. i didnt appreciate it to be lead like this. but after hearing all the other comments made by others who have been had from this company nationwide, i am surprised that the better business bureau has not gotten involved. if you advertise a price for a service. stand by it and try not to cheat people. because if you do word will get around. |

Maaco in Federal Way, Washington
|
| Posted by: Aileen Wedvik in Federal Way, WA. | Purchased: June, 2010 |
| Car Make: Honda | Car Model: Accord--1995 |
| Painter: Maaco in Federal Way Washington |
| I read all the comments about Maaco, and had had a bad experience with a Maaco in Seattle back in the early 1980's. I crunched my 95 Accord, so had a new door put on and then took the car to the Maaco in Federal Way, Washington for a complete paint job. Unlike most of the others on this site, I have been very, very pleased. I called an independent shop first, and they told me that a complete paint job would run from $5000 to $7000. I told them I wanted something that wasn't like a "Maaco job", but that I didn't need showroom quality, either. The guy then told me that the Federal Way Maaco was actually really good, and recommended them. So I went for it. They did a fantastic job!! Well worth the money. I would HIGHLY recommend this shop to anyone in the Puget Sound area. They are located at approx 328th and Pacific Hwy So. |

| I took my car to make and ask them to paint it black. The man at Maaco told me since the car was light blue it would be better to paint it blue. He showed me a blue color on a paper. When I went to get my car from maaco the color was a bright blue, a color you never see any where on the road. I had to asked the man to paint my car black again. I paid to have my car painted black twice. My advise is if you have a color in mind, don't take their suggestions. Because it may cost you much more as it did me.-- I don't know why Maaco is still in business. |

| I took my Honda Accord to the Eugene, OR Maaco telling them to match the dark Bordeaux red, and instead they used a bright red. AWFUL. Then another person took over and said they would fix the color and make it great. It turned out stunningly beautiful - glossy and durable, lasted for years with no trouble at all. Maaco CAN do it, but you have to find the right franchise/person. |
